Power outage in the dead of winter

Power outage in the dead of winter

Last month my husband became really worried about his parents.

He tried to reach them for days and there was no answer on their phone.

This wasn’t like his mom not to return his calls so he called a neighbor who could go and check on them. Thankfully the neighbor still had a landline so they had phone service, because, apparently they had a large power outage in their area that had been going on for days. My husband became very worried and decided to take a drive a few hours away to his parents house. When he arrived he found his mom and dad dressed in many layers of clothing huddled around a small portable propane heater. These type of heaters are not meant to be used indoors so he immediately shut it off. He used to cell phone to call the utility company to see how long the power outage was expected to last and they told him that they didn’t have a definite time yet for it to be restored. He sent his parents to our house and said that he would wait at their home to make sure everything was okay. His next call was to the local HVAC dealer about having a whole house generator installed so that he didn’t have to worry about his parents anymore. Although the HVAC dealer was very busy with the power outage they did set an appointment for the following week. This was a costly investment in my husband’s parents house but well worth the peace of mind that they will be safe in the event that the power goes out for days again. The generator is powerful enough to run their HVAC system so there no matter if it’s hot outside or cold outside, they will be comfortable and safe.
