Have you ever considered changing jobs because the workplace is uncomfortable? I never thought I would be thinking of doing just that but I simply can’t put up with my workspace any longer. When I took the job nearly fifteen years ago I assumed that I would stay there through retirement. I work for the State, have great benefits and the retirement plan would give me a great income in my older years. The problem that exists today is one that I don’t see any end in sight. My general manager decided that she could save money in our department by adjusting the temperature in our workspace. Whether it is the heat of summer or the cold of winter she sets the thermostat to an uncomfortable degree and forces us to work in miserable conditions. We spend our days sweating or freezing and there doesn’t seem to be an inbetween. As with any government office space there are ways that we can cut costs and save the taxpayers money but I don’t think that cutting energy costs at the expense of the employees comfort is the best one. Many of us have tried to reason with our manager but she simply will not listen. The thermostat has a lock on it so we really don’t have any choice but to just deal with it. All of this has made me consider leaving a job that I never thought I would. I will make sure to ask about the heating and cooling policies at each of the places that I set up interviews with.
