I work in a hotel and the thing I like most about my job is all of the interesting people I get to meet. The people from foreign countries are the best. I almost feel like I get to travel the word while never leaving my workplace. It can be challenging at times. Sometimes people don’t speak any English at all. Still, we end up getting our points across. People really are all the same. Recently we had some guests from England. Yes, English people do speak English. However, they don’t speak it the same way we do here in America. English people can be very hard to understand. For example, on Tuesday, our English guests came up to the front desk and asked for a fan heater. It took me a minute to figure out what they wanted. What is a fan heater? After thinking it through I figured out that they meant a space heater. Every room has a space heater but it can be hard to find. The space heaters in the room look like amplifiers. They don’t look like heaters at all. It was very difficult to explain this when the guests didn’t know what a space heater was. Finally, I had to go to the room and show them the space heater. For good measure I also showed them how to turn it on. They were happy after that. I am glad they will be warm and comfortable for the rest of their vacation. And, honestly, I’m looking forward to talking with them again. It is interesting how different English speakers use different words for the same thing. I never would have thought to call a space heater a fan heater though.
