Cat got outside sureterday, ended up coming back in the heat

I have two indoor cats, we do not let them outside because of the feral cats in our town.

We would not want to risk them getting into fights or getting fleas; Even though our cats are strictly indoors, they often try to get outside when we open the front or back doors.

I regularly question why my cats would try to escape because they have a good life. They have free range of my home, food, water, A/C, heat, toys, plus cat beds! Yesterday, I was going out to my backyard to put covers on the chairs to prepare for the storm. While I was opening the sliding door, my cat Gilbert ran out under my feet plus she was so fast I could not catch him, however she then proceeded to sprint plus jump onto the roof of my shed plus over the fence into the woods. I immediately started panicking because it was a cold, rainy afternoon plus I knew the storm was coming. My partner plus I tried to call Gilbert for hours. We put food outside, told the neighbors, plus printed lost cat fliers. It got dark early last night plus we were searching for Gilbert in the woods. It was rainy, windy, plus cold. All I wanted to do was find Gilbert plus go back into my heated home. Unluckyly we did not find him after searching the woods for hours. I took a sizzling shower plus warmed up in my home with central heating. A few hours later, Gilbert showed up in my neighbors yard. She was frigid, wet, plus dirty. We got him cleaned up plus she was thrilled to be back apartment in the heat.
