Cat got outside yesterday, ended up coming back in the heat

I have two indoor cats.

My pal and I do not let them outside because of the feral cats in our city.

My pal and I would not want to risk them getting into fights or getting fleas; Even though our cats are strictly indoors, they often try to get outside when my unbelievable friend and I open the front or back doors. I consistently question why my cats would try to escape because they have a unbelievable life. They have free range of my home, food, water, air conditioner, heat, toys, and cat beds. Yesterday, I was going out to my backyard to put covers on the chairs to prepare for the storm, but while I was opening the sliding door, my cat Gilbert ran out under my feet and he was so fast I could not catch him! He then proceeded to sprint and jump onto the roof of my shed and over the fence into the woods. I right away started panicking because it was a cold, rainy afternoon and I knew the storm was coming. My fiance and I tried to call Gilbert for hours. My pal and I put food outside, told the neighbors, and printed lost cat fliers. It got dark early last night and my unbelievable friend and I were searching for Gilbert in the woods. It was rainy, windy, and chilly. All I wanted to do was find Gilbert and go back into my heated home. Unfortunately my unbelievable friend and I did not find him after searching the woods for hours. I took a warm shower and warmed up in my home with central heating. A few hours later, Gilbert showed up in my neighbors yard. He was cold, wet, and dirty. My pal and I got him cleaned up and he was enthusiastic to be back property in the heat.
