Buying an older house and figuring out when to replace air conditioner

My wife and I recently moved out of our 3 bedroom home.

  • Our cottage-like home was very nice and quaint, however it was not fit for starting a family.

My wife and I just got married about a year ago and we’re looking to settle down into a bigger home to start having kids. We recently purchased a home right near the beach to accommodate the activities that we love doing and all the amenities that the house came with. Because we live more south than our old house, we can still get away with using an air conditioner than a heat pump. However if we moved 500 miles more down south then we probably should have chosen a heat pump. But since geographically an air conditioning will work just as well. In our new home we decided that we should probably update and replace the air conditioner that has already been in the home because it looks very old. I was told from my old HVAC technician that an HVAC system should be replaced every 20 years, depending on the condition and longevity of the system. I hired an HVAC technician to come take a look at the air conditioner system that we have. Some advice that he gave us when determining whether a air conditioner should be replaced is if the system needs frequent repairs from an HVAC technician, if we see an increase in our cooling bills due to our system working inefficiently. There were many reasons, but most importantly I was told to have an HVAC technician assess your air conditioner first before you make any decisions on replacing it.
