Nothing to see here

Have you ever spent hours online trying to find the answer to something only to end up looking at something completely different? It happens to me all the time.

I think that the internet has a way of drawing you in and making you think that you are doing something productive.

In fact, you are simply bouncing from one thing to the other based upon the most popular topic that pops up. Did you ever wonder how one company or topic shows up over another. It isn’t very likely that your small, hometown business is ever going to show up on page one of your favorite search engine. The reason for this is that most of these companies don’t have the funds and resources to afford the time and money that is required to make this happen. They are competing against big box stores and large corporations who have teams of people dedicated to making sure that this information is listed at the top of the list. At times, you will see the exact same ad at the top of several pages when searching. This is because those companies have paid for this placement and the word “ad” is placed right before the link. Smaller stores may pay for advertising online and sometimes key words in those ads can help them show up in a search, but, for most it is money that is just wasted. They may think that they can reach local patrons when in fact, unless a person puts in a specific name, address, or item they carry, it is unlikely work.
