My current thermostat was already installed when we bought our house nearly twenty years ago.
It’s a very simple plastic dial that requires manual adjustment and serves only a single function. While my husband and I have completed extensive remodeling, we overlooked the thermostat. We’ve replaced windows, added insulation and installed ceiling fans to help increase the efficiency and comfort of the home. We’ve invested into new electrical wiring, bathroom renovation and state-of-the-art appliances to improve convenience. When the HVAC technician serviced the furnace in the fall, I complained about the high cost of monthly heating bills. He recommended upgrading to a smart thermostat. I immediately started researching the available models and was amazed by the progress in technology. Today’s generation of thermostats allows easy and remote access through an app on the smartphone. From virtually anywhere in the world at any time of the day or night, I’d be able to make adjustments to temperature. Plus, the thermostat would automatically cater to my family’s schedule, conserving energy when we’re asleep or the house is empty. The thermostat would know the ideal time to start up the furnace or air conditioner to welcome us home to perfect comfort. Advanced thermostat options provide features such as energy tracking, maintenance reminders and alerts for power outages. They can even control air quality accessories such as humidifiers or air purifiers. My biggest problem is deciding which thermostat to buy. I like the idea of a learning thermostat that creates a program according to our preferences, comings and goings. I am also interested in thermostats that feature geofencing. I want a model that lights up when I approach and responds to voice commands.
